Understanding Wisdom Teeth and Their Removal
Wisdom teeth — your third molars — typically emerge between ages 17 and 25. Because most people's jaws don't have enough room for these late-arriving teeth, they frequently become impacted (stuck beneath the gum line), grow at awkward angles, or only partially erupt. When this happens, wisdom teeth can cause crowding, pain, infection, cysts, and damage to adjacent teeth. Early evaluation and timely removal is almost always the best course of action.
When Should Your Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?
Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Sloan recommend evaluation by age 16–18, before the roots are fully formed and the bone is softer — making extraction easier and recovery faster. Common signs you need wisdom teeth removed include: pain or stiffness in the back of your jaw, swollen or bleeding gums near the back teeth, recurring infections around a partially erupted tooth, crowding of your front teeth, or a cyst or tumor detected on X-ray. Even if you're not experiencing symptoms, impacted wisdom teeth should be monitored closely and often removed preventively.

What to Expect During the Procedure
Your procedure at Riverwoods is performed in our state-of-the-art surgical suite with full IV sedation available. Most patients choose to be fully sedated and have no memory of the procedure. After a thorough consultation and review of your X-rays, Dr. Jenkins or Dr. Sloan will remove the wisdom teeth — typically in under an hour for all four. You'll be monitored in recovery and sent home with detailed post-operative instructions. Most patients are back to work or school within 2–4 days.
Recovery and Aftercare
Following wisdom teeth removal, you can expect some swelling, mild discomfort, and limited jaw opening for 3–5 days. Ice packs, prescribed pain medication, and a soft diet will keep you comfortable. Avoid straws, smoking, and hard foods for the first week to prevent dry socket — a painful but preventable complication. Our team provides detailed written and verbal instructions and is available by phone if you have any concerns during recovery.
