What Is an Oral Surgeon?

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) is a dental specialist who has completed 4–6 years of hospital-based surgical residency training after dental school — and in many cases, also earned a medical degree (M.D.). This dual training gives oral surgeons expertise in both the dental and medical aspects of conditions affecting the mouth, jaws, face, and neck. Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Sloan both hold D.D.S. and M.D. degrees, placing them among the most comprehensively trained oral surgeons in Utah.

What Does an Oral Surgeon Treat?

Oral surgeons treat a wide range of conditions including impacted wisdom teeth, dental implants and bone grafting, corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery), facial trauma and fractures, TMJ disorders, obstructive sleep apnea, oral pathology and oral cancer, salivary gland disorders, and facial cosmetic surgery. If your dentist has referred you to an oral surgeon, it's because your condition requires the specialized surgical expertise that only an OMS can provide.
